Illuminated Initial And Border, In A Manual f.35r
Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum
A manual usually contains priests' texts for the conduct of the sacraments (baptism, confirmation, penance, marriage, extreme unction), the visitation of the sick, the burial service, and a variety of blessings. This manuscript emphasises Gloucester feast-days in its calendar, and has an inscription stating that it 'belongs to St. Aldate': it therefore must have been owned by the church of St. Aldate's in Gloucester.
This illuminated initial 'T' marks the start of the Canon of the Mass. In the twelfth line a mention of the pope has been erased, in accordance with a mid 16th-century decree of Henry VIII.
