Ownership Inscription, In A Collection Of The Lives Of English And Augustinian Saints

Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum

Date: 1190

Shelfmark: Additional MS 35110

Item number: f.2v

Genre: Illuminated Manuscript

This flyleaf has a six-line inscription stating that it belonged to the convent of Augustinian friars at Newcastle Upon Tyne (it begins 'Hic est liber fratrum heremitarum ordinis sancti Augustini de Novo Castro . . .'). All but the first three of these words, however, are written in a later style of script, over an erasure, suggesting that the book was not written at Newcastle, but was acquired by the friars there in the 13th century.
