This Missal belonged in the Middle Ages to the Augustinian Priory of Guisborough, about ten miles east of Stockton-on-Tees and five miles south of Redcar, as shown by a number of entries in its calendar, including: commemorations of Robert Bruce, the founder and his wife; several of the priors; and records of fires which occurred there in the 12th and 14th centuries. The initial to Psalm 109 is decorated in an unusual style: the red and blue 'puzzle' design (so-called because the pieces fit together like a jigsaw puzzle) is quite common, but the reddish-brown ground of the foliate ornament is far less usual.
