Illuminated Initial And Border, In The Prayerbook Of John Northewode f.182v

Medium: Ink, pigments and gold on vellum

Date: 1400

Shelfmark: Additional MS 37787

Item number: f.182v

Genre: Illuminated manuscript

This manuscript contains of a variety of devotional texts; mostly Latin prayers and English hymns. It was probably compiled for (and by?) John Northewode, a monk of the Cistercian abbey of Bordesley, near Redditch in Worcestershire. This page consists of an extremely unusual framed inscription, recording John Northwood's admission as a novice to St. Mary's, Bordesley, on the feast of St. Augustine (26 May) 1386. It is in the past tense, showing that it was written sometime later. The facing page, apparently contemporary with the rest of the manuscript, has an inscription and anathema referring to John as a monk.
