Marginal Drawing Of A Sleeping Man, In A Psalter

Marginal Drawing Of A Sleeping Man, In A Psalter

Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum

Date: 1200

Shelfmark: Additional MS 38819

Item number: f.57r

Genre: Illuminated manuscript

It is difficult to account for the presence of the sleeping male figure in the lower right corner of this page. His appearance is similar to the way in which bearded figure of Jesse is usually represented at the base of Jesse Tree images, but there is no reference to Jesse (or any other sleeping person) in the text on this page. The style of the drawing is essentially Romanesque (which gave way to Gothic in the 13th century), which suggests that the manuscript may have been produced in a rather conservative centre.
