Illuminated Initial To Psalm 109, In A Psalter

Illuminated Initial To Psalm 109, In A Psalter

Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum

Date: 1200

Shelfmark: Additional MS 38819

Item number: f.112r

Genre: Illuminated manuscript

The most splendid decoration in this manuscript is this initial 'D', which introduces Psalm 109. It combines tightly spiralling foliage with 'Byzantine blossoms' dragons' heads, a gold ground, and a diaper-patterned background edged in red. Such lavish displays of colour were forbidden by early Cistercian statutes, and yet this book seems to have passed into Cistercian ownership early in the 15th century.
