Walter de Whittlesey--who presumably came from Whittlesey, just a few miles east of Peterborough--was a monk, scribe, and probably also an illuminator, of Peterborough Abbey. He compiled and wrote out most of this manuscript. His name appears at the top of the first flyleaf in cursive script, and about half-way down a more formal hand records that this book used to belong to him: 'Iste liber fuit quondam fratris Walteri de Wytlese'
