In the event of a dispute concerning property or rights, a person or institution needed to be able to produce documents to prove that they owned the property or had been granted those rights. The documents themselves would usually be written on loose single-sheets, with seals attached, but these would often be copied and kept in bound volumes, such as the present manuscript, for safe-keeping. Typically the charters might be arranged in roughly chronological order, from the oldest to the most recent.
