This Gospel Book was written on the Continent in the 10th century, but reached England fairly soon thereafter, as shown by textual additions ranging in date from the 10th to the 15th century, which relate to Thorney Abbey, in the Fenlands between Peterborough and Wisbech. The Gospel of Mark is introduced by a wide initial 'I' running the full height of the text, partly filled by a zigzag pattern, and with foliate ornaments at top and bottom. The annotations in small script in the margins are section numbers and references to an index (canon tables) of like passages in other gospels.
