Chronological List Of The Kings Of England, In Ralph Of Diceto's Minor Historical Works
Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum
Ralph of Diceto (d. 1202) gained an education in Paris, and became a dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in 1180. He wrote a variety of historical works.
In the first two narrow columns on this page is the end of a list of Visigothic and Lombard kings; these are followed in the third column by a rubric and a large decorated initial 'B', introducing a list of the kings of England, from Brutus onwards. This type of initial, with colour-washes of paint, is typically found in manuscripts made in Benedictine monasteries.
