Lower Cover And Fore-Edge Of A Binding

Medium: Binding

Date: 1400

Shelfmark: Additional MS 62130

Item number: Binding

Scale: Centimetres

Genre: Illuminated manuscript

This volume contains a 15th-century ownership note and shelfmark of the library of Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire, and has added Fountains inscriptions dated 1512. It has a comparatively rare example of a typical English medieval binding: the vast majority (perhaps 99%) of medieval manuscripts have been rebound in later bindings. The fore-edge of the leaves are approximately flush with the fore-edge of the boards; a pink-stained leather strap attached to the front cover terminates in a metal catch, which hooks onto a pin projecting from the centre of the back board.
