Garden of Eden from MS illumination with fountain and fruit trees
Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum
This vision of the Garden of Eden is one of seven miniatures from a history of the world written and illuminated in France during the 15th century.
Adam and Eve listen reverentially as the figure of God indicates the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil from which they are forbidden to eat. In the centre of the garden a fountain feeds four rivers, named in Genesis as Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel and Euphrates.
