Bedford Hours, Exit from the Ark
Medium: Pigments and gold on vellum
The Bedford Hours was produced in Paris for John, Duke of Bedford, to celebrate his marriage to Anne, daughter of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, in 1423. It is written in Latin and French on vellum. At this time, the English were in control of France, with the Duke of Bedford ruling as Regent. Seven years later, on Christmas Eve, 1430, Anne gave the manuscript as a present to her husband's young nephew, Henry VI, who had been proclaimed king in 1422 when not yet nine months old.
