In about the years 392-3 St. Jerome wrote a work 'Concerning Illustrious Men', consisting of short biographies of Christian writers, with lists of their works. After Jerome's death other writers provided continuations. These and similar works are gathered together in this volume, whose original back pastedown is inscribed with the ownership inscription 'of the church of St. Peter, Westminster', i.e. Westminster Abbey. In the body of the book, the smaller coloured initials follow a pattern with alternate red initials, interspersed with green, brown, and blue ones. In the lower margin is the quire number in Roman numerals 'ij' (i.e. 2)
