In the Middle Ages 'Dictamen' was the art of writing official letters, and a 'Formulary' was a series of sample texts. This manuscript contains several formularies relating to dictamen. Many of the texts in these collections relate to the Cistercian abbey of Hailes, in the modern county of Gloucestershire. The first letter on this page is from William Henley (line 2 of the page), abbot of St. Mary's monastery, Hailes, in the diocese of Worcester (line 3), and is dated 4 April 1406 (line 8).
