The half-length figure in this initial 'C' is presumably intended to represent Cassiodorus, holding and pointing at a copy of this work. Cassiodorus (c. 490 - c. 583) was a Roman writer, statesman, and later a monk, who wrote the Institutiones as a guide to monks, to show how they could achieve a greater understanding of the Bible by, for example, reading the commentaries of other early writers.
