This is a remarkably elaborate inscription. It states that Lord John Beaver, monk of St. Albans, had the manuscript made, and that with the permission of John Whethamstede, the abbot (1420-1440), he has given it to God, the Virgin Mary, and the church of St. Alban. This is followed by an anathema and a list of the contents. Iohannes (i.e. John) Beaver's initials, 'IB' are in gold within the illuminated initial 'H' at the start of the inscription.
