Of the writings of Peter Lombard (born in Lombardy c. 1100, died as archbishop of Paris in 1160) the most famous was his Sentences, a systematic compendium of theology in four books. This copy was owned by the Benedictine abbey of Sts. Peter, Paul, and Oswald, at Bardney (about 10 miles east of Lincoln) in the Middle Ages. This fine illuminated initial introduces Book IV of the work, which covers the sacraments in general, and the seven sacraments in particular, as well as the four last things: death, judgement, hell, and heaven.
