Unlike some of the other initials in this manuscript, whose decoration is eccentric, this one is of a typical 13th-century type: they are sometimes called 'puzzle' initials, because the blue and red parts interlock like a jigsaw puzzle. Part of this manuscript is written with the first line of writing above the top line of ruling, but the majority is written with the first line of text below the top ruled line: the change in scribal practice occurred in roughly 1220-1240, so this book was probably written during this transitional period.
