The top of this page has the end of a list of chapters, followed by a rubric in capitals, and the start of Bede's 'De temporibus', marked with a large purple initial. The four-dot symbol in the lower left-hand margin is a reader's mark often found in Canterbury manuscripts. 'De temporibus' was one of the most important early medieval writings on time and calculation of it. Bede had an unusually good knowledge of natural science and mathematics for a scholar of his time (8th century) in Northumbria.
