The Damsel of Hongrefort With The King And Queen, In 'The Romance Of Lancelot Du Lac'

The Damsel of Hongrefort With The King And Queen, In 'The Romance Of Lancelot Du Lac'

Medium: Ink, pigments and gold on vellum

Date: 1370

Shelfmark: Royal MS 20 D.iv

Item number: f.102v

Genre: Illuminated manuscript

Originally written and illuminated in France, c. 1300, this manuscript had reached England by the second half of the century, when two miniatures and two initials containing the Bohun heraldic arms were painted in a style characteristic of books made for the Bohun family, who earls of Hereford and Essex for most of the 13th and 14th centuries. It is possible that it would have been kept at the family castle at Pleshey, near Chelmsford. This added miniature shows the moment when the 'damoiselle de Hongefort' meets King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. The initial below was added at the same time as the miniature, in England, but the marginal decoration is French, and contemporary with the writing, c.1300.
