View of some militia on the road between London and Portsmouth. The text accompanying the picture explains ' an Instance of unexampled speed, used by a Body of Guards, Consisting of 1920 Rank & File, besides Officers, who on 10th June left London & actually began to Embark for Ireland, at Portsmouth at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, having travelled 74 miles in 10 Hours'. The artist is Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), who was well known for drawing large complex scenes filled with people, who were often drawn as amusing caricatures.
