View of a mill at Baldock in northern Hertfordshire. Baldock is situated on an important Roman road- the Icknield Wa and is thirty seven miles from London. Because of the towns position on the Bourne Eau there were a number of mills here and the Domesday Book actually records three in Baldock. The town was founded by the Knights Templar in the 12th century but during the 17th and 18th centuries Baldock became known for its malting and brewing industries and for the market that was held every Thursdays for the brewers to sell their produce.
