View of the village of Amwell in Hertfordshire. John Scott writing in 1776, described the village in his work ‘Amwell: A Descriptive Poem’. A short passage from the poem reads,
”Such rural life! So calm, it little yields
Of interesting act, to swell the page
Of history or song: yet much the soul
Its sweet simplicity delights, and oft
From noise of busy towns, to fields and groves,
The Muses’s sons have fled to find repose”.
