The diarist and fifth Viscount Torrington, John Bying, wrote of his 1790 tour of Dover that one of the chief attractions of Dover Castle were the castle keys. Also on display was Queen Elizabeth's pocket pistol. Visitors were encouraged to fling stones in the castle well for luck.
