Although not blessed with a naturally deep harbour, Folkestone was of great strategic importance in defending the south coast from invasion. It was one of the historic Cinque Ports, which, before the establishment of the Royal Navy, could be called upon by the crown at any time and had to contribute supplies to the King's fleet. In the 18th century, the town was twice struck by epidemics of smallpox. Its main industries at the time this image was created were fishing and smuggling.
