View of a fire at the Royal Naval Hospital on the morning of January 2nd 1779. In 1692 Queen Mary decided that the buildings begun by Charles II should be completed to provide a Royal Naval Hospital for disabled seamen. The buildings were designed by Wren with Hawksmoor as his assistant. The complex was added to by another architect Vanbrugh. This view shows the Queen Mary Block of 1699-1752, with its chapel alight
