The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed four-fifths of the area within the city walls. The terrible disaster caused people to question what was responsible, many believing it was God's way of punishing city dwellers for their sinful lives. The statue of the boy is in memory of the fire of London "occasioned by the sin of gluttony".
