View of the Waterworks at Chelsea. In 1723, the Chelsea Waterworks Company was established. It supplied the water to west London which at this time was the area around Westminster. There was a tide mill established near the Thames (where the Churchill Gardens estate is today in Pimlico) and reservoirs in Hyde Park and St James's Park. However as its customers grew, the water it provided was often impure, contaminated by waste and sewage, and 'destructive to health'.
