Hampstead Heath is situated on high ground with distant views of north London. It was much visited by Londoners after the discovery of a spring there in 1698. Macky, writing in 1709 complained that "its nearness to London brings so many loose women in vampt up clothes to catch the City apprentices, that modest company are ashamed to appear here".
