Daniel Defoe wrote in the early-18th century: "From Richmond to London, the river sides are full of villages, and those villages so full of beautiful buildings, charming gardens, and the rich habitations of gentlemen." This view is of an old mansion in Richmond by the riverside, one of many fine buildings were built here in the18th century.
