Daniel Defoe visited Warwick in the early 18th century and commented: "Here we saw the antient cell or hermitage, where they say the famous Guy Earl of Warwick ended his days in a private retreat for his devotion, and is from him call'd Guy Clift, by others Gibclift; 'tis now ... the pleasant seat of an antient Norman family of the name of De Beau-foe."
