According to Cumbrian legend the village of Patterdale is a corruption of Patrickdale and the local church is dedicated to St Patrick. It is located on the edge of the Ullswater Lake, which, at 8.5 miles long and up to one mile wide, is one of Cumbria's largest lakes.
