A View of Sheffield from Wadsley Bridge

Artist: Bonnington, Richard
Medium: Aquatint
Date: 1801

View by Richard Bonnington (1768-1835) of Sheffield in Northern England. Sheffield is situated in a natural amphitheatre of 7 hills and at the confluence of 5 rivers. There is evidence that the area was populated before the Bronze Age and so it has a history of over 5000 years. Sheffield is perhaps best known for its steel industries but this print, which dates from the early 19th century, shows some of the beautiful scenery in the area. Bonnington was a drawing master and portrait painter. His son Richard Parkes Bonnington also became a very well known painter.
