View of Cork Harbour and the surrounding landscape, with a key at top left. The harbour is one of the largest natural sheltered harbours in Ireland and is filled with a series of large and small islands of which Spike Island is the most well known. It was developed as a naval base in the 17th century providing protection to the Channel but it was during the 18th century with the event of the Napoleonic wars that the defences were further developed.
