A View of the North Front of the Mountain of Gibraltar
Artist: Test, William
View of the north front of the mountain of Gibraltar. To the left is the Barbary Coast of North Africa and the town of Cruta and to the right is is the Spanish coast. The various landmarks of Gibraltar are labelled. This watercolour by William Test in 1779 is based on an earlier view of 1740, taken by 'His Majesty's Chief Engineer of the Garrison' Lieut. Genl. William Skinner. The British sought to improve the fortifications of the city and military engineers, who were trained in draughtsmanship, produced views, maps and plans for the Ordnance Office. The British had captured Gibraltar in 1704 and between 1779 and 1783, the Spanish conducted a major siege of the city.
