A View of the South Front of the Mountain of Gibraltar
Artist: Test, William
View of the south front of the mountain of Gibraltar. Across the bay on the right is the Spanish coast. The various landmarks of Gibraltar are labelled. This watercolour by William Test in 1779 is based on an earlier view of 1740, taken by 'His Majesty's Chief Engineer of the Garrison' Lieut. Genl. William Skinner. The British sought to improve the fortifications of the city and military engineers, who were trained in draughtsmanship, produced views, maps and plans for the Ordnance Office. The British had captured Gibraltar in 1704 and between 1779 and 1783, the Spanish conducted a major siege of the city.
