This view is part of a collection of six pictures by Lieutenant Fisher of the Royal Artillery. Fisher wrote a short description of this view,
"The Hudson or North River, almost every where presents the most delightful subjects for the pencil. The present scene was taken on a voyage up the river and was selected for its notoriety, as for the singularity of the feature which distinguishes it. The breadth of this river does not equal that of the river St Lawrence but it exceeds it in the beauty and variety of the country through which it runs. The mountains here are much higher, and in general take a more picturesque form. The distance of this spot is about sixty or seventy miles above New York".
