View of the island of St Lucia in the Caribbean. The history of St Lucia is one of warfare and political upheaval, with both the French and British claiming sovereignty. During the eighteenth century the island became an important military garrison and extensive fortifications were constructed here by both the British and French forces. The island changed hands a total of 14 times before it was finally ceded to the English in 1814.
