The ancient town of Canterbury was the major ecclesiastical seat in England and an important pilgrimage shrine. In the late 18th century, when this image was made, it was a quiet market town. In her posthumous travelogue, 'Through England on a Side Saddle' (1888), Celia Fiennes described it as "a flourishing and handsome town with many brick buildings".
