View of Chilham Castle, at this time the seat of James Wildman Esq. Chilham Castle was built in an important defensive position overlooking a bend on the River Stour and with a straight view down to Canterbury half-a-dozen miles away. Unfortunately most of the medieval castle was pulled down for building material leaving the ruins shown in this picture to the left of the house. A red brick Jacobean mansion was built between the castle keep and the village by courtier Sir Dudley Digges. He moved into his new house in 1619.
