View of the great gatehouse at Cooling Castle, near Rochester in Kent. This was built by Sir John Cobham, who obtained a licence to crenelate from the King in 1380 and it was completed in 1380. The twin towers of the gatehouse with their heavily machicolated parapets are particularly impressive. The castle was damaged by a siege in 1554, and afterwards the Cobhams never returned to live here, letting the castle to gradually fall into disrepair.
