Castle Acre, county of Norfolk

Castle Acre, county of Norfolk

Medium: Pen and ink on paper

Date: 1790

Shelfmark: Ktop XXXI

Item number: 48-c

Genre: Topographical Drawing

The remains of the castle are overshadowed by the spectacular earthworks covering 15 acres. The castle is a good example of motte-and-bailey design: an earthen mound with tower (the bailey) surrounded by a ditched enclosure (the motte). Construction of the castle was most likely begun in the 1070s.
