Medium: Pen and ink on paper

Date: 1702

Shelfmark: Ktop XLV

Sketch by celebrated architect Nicholas Hawksmoor of a classical dome for Castle Howard in Yorkshire. Initially Sir John Vanbrugh was employed by the Earl of Carlisle as the architect on the castle. Vanbrugh provided the ideas and overall plan, but Hawksmoor was employed on the house itself because of his greater experience of the everyday practicalities of building: he supervised the masons and workmen onsite. He also made detailed drawings for many parts of the building such as this one.
