View of the mausoleum at Castle Howard in Yorkshire. The Earl of Carlisle specified his burial place in great detail in his will. He asked his son to "consult & take ye opinion of Sr John Vanbrugh & Mr Hawksmore, with who's performance I am very well satisfied". He desired "a little chapple to hold about 40 or 50 people with a Cupola, or Tower upon it & placed upon Lody Hill ... whereby it may be an ornament to ye Seat". The building seen in the picture was built to a design of Hawksmoor between 1731 and 1742. Erected at great expense, the mausoleum is huge but also elegant and simple in its design.
