View of Caernarfon Castle. Situated at the Southern end of the Menai Strait the castle was strategically placed for easy access between the north coast and western coasts of Wales and was built on the shoreline to allow for supplies to be easily transported to the castle by sea. The castle was designed by James of St. George, Master of the King’s Works in Wales and Walter of Hereford who employed builders and specialist craftsmen from all over England. The building of the castle and the defence of the city of Caernarfon with walls, gates and a fortified quay took approximately 40 years, with work being carried out intermittently, the castle was finally completed in 1330.
