View of a copper works at Aberavon in Glamorganshire, Wales. Aberavon is situated on the banks of the river Avon (from which the town derived its name) near its estuary in Swansea Bay. The large copper smelting works were established here in 1838. In 1840 they were taken over by the Company of the Copper Mines of England. Smelters were attracted to the area because of the good water and coal supplies and the ease with which the copper could be transported.
