Distant view by Thomas Walmsley of Freshwater Cliff from Staplers Heath in the Isle of Wight. Freshwater Cliff is situated on the south coast of the western tip of the Island. Adam Black in his ‘Guide to the Isle of Wight’, published in 1870 described the area in the follow words, "The prospects from Afton Down have always been famous; the view over Freshwater is especially striking. Freshwater Bay stretches round in a splendid curve, the chalk cliffs rising perpendicularly to a height of some 500 to 600 feet. Beyond is a broad belt of ocean, along which ships of all sizes are constantly passing to and fro".
