Dunderagh Castle, Lough Fine, Argyleshire, Scotland
Artist: Walmsley, Thomas
Medium: Aquatint, coloured
View of a castle overlooking a loch in Scotland. This print is entitled ‘Dunderagh Castle, Lough Fine, Argyleshire’, unfortunately a castle by this name cannot be identified. It is thought that the loch is in fact Loch Fyne and two castles stand on its shores- Inveraray and Minard. Inveraray Castle more closely resembles that in the print, with its distinctive corner towers topped with conical shaped roofs however it is not situated as close to the banks of the loch as the depicted castle- perhaps this is artistic liscence. Inveraray castle was built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier castle, by Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll.
