Dunskey Castle, Galloway, June 30th 1789
View of Dunskey Castle in Galloway, Scotland. The castle was well situated as it was surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs and the sea, with the landward side of the castle protected by a wide ditch cut from the rock. The L shaped tower house was built in the 16th century by the Aidars of Kilhilt to replace an earlier 13th century fortification which had been burnt and had fallen into ruin. No mortar was used in building the castle; it is the cut of the rocks, taken from the cliffs below, that holds the walls together.
